I cook and bake a lot. I require a lot of ingredients to be on hand at all times. Running to the store for “the basics” all the time is frustrating. So…. a few years ago we bought some food grade buckets from a local restaurant. The downside of them is that they smell like pickles. We aired them out the best we could and gave them a good washing.
We added the bulk ingredients and started stacking. Vertical rather than horizontal storage. They seal tightly so that food stays fresh. The buckets hold rice, flour, salt and sugar…. the basics. With careful shopping and planning, the buckets stay well stocked
The system worked out great. Unfortunately the buckets were an eye sore…. too industrial. It is one thing to be organized and well stocked. It is another thing to have a pleasant kitchen to cook in.
I purchased several rolls of stylish contact paper and started covering the buckets. I even covered some of the lids. We even took the large bags of dog food we had sitting around and emptied those into spare buckets and covered them with pretty paper.
Problems solved!! Every few weeks we check the supply in the buckets, order the necessary items from the grocery store and keep cooking and baking.
