My Favorite Things: Kitchen Appliances

I am a firm believer that a cook/baker needs to have good tools.  Over the next few weeks I will share with you some of my favorite things in the kitchen. Part 1 of  “my favorite things” is small kitchen appliances.

I received my kitchen mixer a few years ago.  At that time I was making homemade bread multiple times during the week.  The mixer saved my arms and back. I use the mixer to make multiple loaves of quick bread (pumpkin and zucchini bread) for eating and gift giving.  I also use it to whip up frosting and homemade whipped cream. Just add the ingredients and let it whisk away.  A year ago my husband bought me the pasta maker attachment.  I mix up the dough, add the pasta attachment and in under an hour I had fresh pasta.  **I want to try gluten free pasta one of these day.

One of the ways we try to stay healthy is by eating fruit smoothies.  We wanted something that could chop ice and puree fruit.  I also use the blender to make pumpkin puree in the fall for pastries and at Thanksgiving for pies.  The blender also makes finely chopped up bread crumbs for meatballs and meatloaf.

My final small kitchen appliance is the crockpot.  It is great for starting soup in the morning and being able to eat it by late afternoon/early evening.  One of my favorite uses for the crockpot is for cooking chicken.  I add several breast, add a savory soup broth, set it on high and four hours later, we have tender chicken to put on rice or noodles. The crockpot slow cooks excellent barbecue chicken. During the holidays, I add all the ingredients for hot apple cider and turn the crockpot on low or warm through out a holiday dinner. The cider doesn’t boil but stays nice a hot thought out the evening.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
