Pumpkin Sugar Cookies

Need cookies for a party or school event??  Here a a fun Halloween /Fall cookie to make.

Start with your favorite sugar cookie recipe. (It makes a large batch of cookies).

  • 1 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • 5 cups sugar
  • 2 t. baking powder
  • 2 t. salt

Chill for an hour

Once your cookie dough has been chilled,  get out your food coloring.  Add a few drops of red food coloring and a few yellow drops (you will want a touch more red than yellow). Mix this together and add any additional coloring until you have a wonderful orange color.


Re-chill if needed. Mixing in the coloring may have warmed up the dough and made it a bit sticky.

Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut each individual pumpkin.

Transfer the pumpkins to a baking pan/cookie sheet and add any decorations you like.  On half of my cookies, I sprinkled the pumpkin stems with green sugar. The other half of the cookies, I decorated with leaf candy pieces and sugar sprinkles.

Bake the decorated cookies at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes

Transfer to a cooling rack and allow to completely cool before eating or storing away.

  1. Yummy, yummy! Sugar cookies are one of my favorites. I bet the pumpkin adds a touch of sweetness. But, could I have just a dabble of frosting? 🙂 Thanks for sharing with SYC.
