Gluten Free Salisbury Steak

I found this really great recipe for Salisbury steak but… I was unable to eat it because it had gluten in it and in the gravy. I had not had Salisbury steak since my grandmother had made in probably 20 years ago.

So I sat down and tweaked the recipe a bit.

I started by adding all the ingredients to the ground beef.. including gluten free bread crumbs which I made by putting gluten free bread in my blender. One gluten problem solved.

I then make the patties into large flat disks. I fried them on both sides until a crust forms. Beware the steaks like to crumble so make sure they are cooked well on one side before flipping… and flip carefully.

Then I mix up the gravy. I start with 2 cups of warm water. I then add about 1/4 cup gluten free all purpose flour. I also add 2 beef bullion cubes. I mix this up and let it set for a short while. Turn the heat down to low. I then poured the gravy mixture right into the pan with the cooking patties/steaks. The gravy will fill in the pan around the steaks. If it begins to get too thick, I just add a bit more water and mix it carefully with small spoon or wisk… being careful not to hit the steaks that are cooking.

Now the steaks and the gravy are gluten free.

I highly recommend tossing in some coarse chopped up mushrooms while the gravy and the steaks are cooking. The mushrooms really enhance the flavor.

The recipe is really good with baked red potatoes… seasoned lightly with Italian seasoning.

  2. Form the above mixture into thick disks/patties. Cook in an oiled pan on medium heat. Watch for scorching. Turn down heat if needed.
  3. Flip patties to cook on other side. While the second side is cooking, mix together the water, gluten free flour and beef bullion cubes. Let this sit for a few minutes.
  4. Pour the gravy over the steaks and turn now the heat to low. Continue to cook the steaks and the gravy. Add more water if the gravy gets to be too thick. Carefully stir the gravy with a small spoon or mini wisk. Continue to cook for about 15 minutes (until the steaks are done).
  5. If you choose, add coarse chopped mushrooms to the gravy near the end of the cooking.
